David Altmejd uses "plexiglas, quartz, polystyrene, expandable foam, epoxy clay, epoxy gel, resin, synthetic hair, clothing, leather shoes, thread, mirror, plaster, acrylic paint, latex paint, metal wire, glass eyes, sequin, ceramic, synthetic flowers, synthetic branches, glue, gold, feathers, steel, coconuts, aqua resin, burlap, lighting system including fluorescent lights, Sharpie ink, wood, coffee grounds, polyurethane foam" as materials and that's just for one of his large scale sculptural pieces, The Flux and the Puddle.

Noah Scalin's Anatomy of War is literally a visceral representation of war. Showing the most obvious symbol of war -- a gun -- with soft, fleshy organs. Hardware that is capable of destroying it's own insides.

Inspired by Myriam Dion

I am crowning Myriam Dion as the reigning goddess of the xacto knife! She takes newspapers, one of the most disposable and forgotten of objects, and turns them into lace. Intricate, insanely detailed patterns emerge from the pulpy pages of the daily news. Although many individual pages stand on their own as beautiful works of art, it is her large scale installation pieces that take my breath away.

Inspired by Claire Morgan

Claire Morgan has a unique approach to sculpture. She combines natural objects such as butterflies, taxidermy specimens, and dandelion seeds with broken bottles and torn plastic to create graphic, impactful exhibits. I use exhibits deliberately, because her sculptures evoke butterfly collections or museum displays due to their meticulous construction.

Dustin Yellin creates large figurative collages sandwiched in between layers of glass in his series Psychogeographies. I'm fascinated by the soft, pliable paper being pressed between the smooth, hard glass.

Photographs Rendered in Play-Doh is one of my favorite blogs. Eleanor Macnair recreates both historical and modern photographs using Play-Doh. Fun and playful, these colorful creations are a joy to look at. She posts lost of in progress shots over on her Instagram.

Skulls by Jim is truth in advertising. Jim makes ambrotypes and sculptures. They're gorgeous and often using unconventional materials, but always the image is a skull.

Porcelain Babies by Johnson Tsang

Delicate porcelain is the perfect material to create babies as millions of twee figurines prove, but Johnson Tsang's are a far cry from the Precious Moments of my childhood. I love the quirky expressions and the titles imply that the images reflect family dynamics.
