Inspiration: Wittner Fabrice

I've always been atracted to lightpainting and I used to have this famous image of Pablo Picasso hanging in my studio.

The long exposures needed for night photography allows images to be created on film that we can't see under normal circumstances. Often I find that the images are beautiful and eerie, but they are devoid of content. Wittner Fabrice has changed that by combining light painting with the urban art of stenciling. In his series, Enlighted Souls, he adds figures to nighttime landscapes by flooding light through large stencils creating a fleeting impression of humanity in the streets.

I used stencils to paint enlightened characters to remember human losses and to show the spirit of a wouned city. It turned out to be an intersting way to share ideas and feelings about society and life. After all, this is what street art is made for.

The first series, Christchurch Quake, is a response to the aftermath the 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, NZ.

The second series, Hanoi Countryside Mice, brings images of country kids to the urban cityscapes.

The large scale stencils are detailed and graphic. There are more photos of the process over on his website, but here's a glimpse.
