Cargo (2017): Quarantine Cinema Day 3

Up next is in Quarantine Cinema is Cargo (2017) starring Martin Freeman. This quiet, poignant film from directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke was a pleasant surprise in the zombie genre.

Cargo (2017)

First off, this Netflix movie is just gorgeous. The beautiful cinematography combined with the stunning Australian landscape is an excellent combination. We first meet Thoomi (Simone Landers), a quirky young girl with a grand imagination, running along a path.

Andy (Martin Freeman), his wife Kay (Susie Porter), and baby girl are living on a boat in a post-apocalyptic future. The world is quiet and empty.

And although food is scarce, the family has some calm, intimate moments. In fact intimate is a great way to describe this film.

As they float down the river they encounter another family…

… but something's not quite right.

I mean, the Netflix graphic and the poster give away that this is a zombie flick, but the zombie encounters are really few and far between. That said, the zombies are especially oozing.

Both humans and zombies are rare, but each encounter shows how challenging simply living has become.
It's a phsychological view of Andy and his struggle to keep his loved ones safe -- at any cost.
It does not pass the Bechdel test -- at least I don't think so.
Still from Cargo 2017 of Toomi's tribe. A female warrior on the left holds up her hand to stop the other warriors from throwing their spears.
Zoomi's entire family is aborignal so there is plenty of diversity. I don't know enough about aboriginal culture to know if the native people are well represented.

Let me know what I should add to my ever growing list either on social media or email me here. For now I'm sticking with movies -- theatrical releases, straight to DVD, or TV movies.
