I took a pictures of a small pink Chinese bowl that I throw small bits of waxed linen thread and fortunes. Using my favorite Android phone application, FX Camera, I shot the waxy string and bits of paper up close and made this little book. My friend Anita came over so we could figure out a new book structure- a longstitch style neither of us has done before. The covers are simple printmaking paper and offset the black pages nicely. I'm thankful for good fortunes, good friends and my amazing, supportive family.
This week's book is a Chinese Star book made from leftover flyers featuring the main image from a current work in progress: Nice Girls Don't Yell. I thought this structure might be an interesting way to work with this image, but the limit of the square format doesn't work. I also had a challenge getting the covers on, and after checking with my mentor, found that I had not left enough slack in the corners. I probably won't make a new version, because I can tell my 24 page double sided folded version has much more potential.
Garbage, garbage everywhere. My neighborhood can be downright trashy. More FX Camera pictures from my Android on one of the hard light settings. The stencil text is utilitarian and end pages are from a FedEx envelope. The title and colophon are printed on address labels, but my favorite part has to be the way that the plastic bag wrapping the cover turned out. Coptic bound with waxed linen thread.
